A fun-filled sci-fi adventure awaits you at the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, which is also the first planetarium in the United States. Ever since its opening in 1930, this oldest planetarium has been offering delightful and awe-inspired experience of watching the glorious spectacle of the night sky to its audience. You will also get to see interesting exhibits when you visit Shoot for the Moon that highlights the exciting stories of space exploration and showcases America’s bold plan to travel to the Moon.
Deep Space Adventure is the new exhibit and show that takes you aboard the observation deck of a futuristic starship where you find yourself surrounded by the larger-than-life phenomena of the dynamic universe. That’s not all, you also get to see a Sky Show in the Definiti Space Theater or Universe Theater. You have the option of selecting from five sky shows that you can see upon arrival.
The Adler Planetarium undoubtedly provides fun-filled entertainment for the completely family where you get to enjoy a closer look at what exists beyond Earth.

Shows and Exhibits: Deep Space Adventure: This particular exhibit takes your family and you on a adventure aboard the observation deck of a futuristic starship where larger-than-life phenomena of the dynamic Universe surround you. The main highlight is the Grainger Sky Theater, which allows audience experience technologically advanced theater experience ever developed that would include spectacular space imagery.
Historic Atwood Sphere Experience: Chicago’s oldest planetarium, Atwood Sphere was constructed in 1913. The sphere is supposed to be 15 feet in diameter and has 692 holes drilled into it through the metal surface thereby enabling lights to enter and depict the position of the brightest stars.
Shoot for the Moon: This exhibit focuses on the interesting stories of space exploration and America’s plans to travel to the Moon. The exhibit begins with A Journey with Jim Lovell, featuring the fully restored Gemini 12 spacecraft and the Lovell Collection of personal space artifacts.
Planet Explorers: Adler’s newest exhibit lets families with children ages 3 – 8 take the helm in this modern-day space adventure. Future space explorers will enter a world where they can play and learn what it entails to be part of a mission to outer space.
Night Sky Live! – Take an in-depth journey through the cosmos with Night Sky Live! With the help of modern exploration and observing techniques, this show gives the audience a deeper look at the breathtakingly beautiful, diversity of objects that make up our universe.
